FAQ

What is the MPAN or supply number?

MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number. It is a unique reference number that identifies each electricity meter in the UK. A good analogy would be your telephone number, it is unique and there can be no two telephone numbers that are alike. It not only identifies each electricity meter, it also gives us clues as to what type of meter it is, in which area of the UK does the meter belong too and a bunch of other technical things etc.

An MPAN is not necessary to quote a price but if the MPAN is not available we would require a lot of the technical information from the customer. In most cases customers struggle to provide that information. Therefore it is advisable that customers keep their MPANs handy to get prices. An MPAN can be found on your electricity bill, it is usually next to a big ‘S’, this is because it is also referred to as an ‘S’ Number or Supply Number.

If you are unable to find your MPAN we can help you. Being a leading energy broker we have access to tools that allow us to find your MPAN number for you. If the person responsible for the electricity bills provides us with an address and/or meter serial number of the electricity meter, we can arrange your MPAN for you. It only takes a few minutes.

  • An MPAN is known by and referred to by many other names, see the most commonly used below:

How do I switch to a cheaper Electricity supplier?

There are many electricity suppliers in the market. You simply choose an electricity supplier, agree a tariff with the new supplier, the new supplier may want to approve your credit first, if the application is approved the new supplier will try to take over your electricity supply from you current supplier and if the current supplier does not object to you leaving them due to an existing contract or an outstanding balance on your account, your electricity will switch to the new supplier.

Having said this we wish if switching was this simple, for example, starting off which electricity supplier should you choose? The truth is it is very complex, it is a long process and there are so many steps in the middle. But you should not be afraid to switch suppliers because switching can help you save a lot of money, result in better customer services and offer you a plan that is more suitable to your needs.

Finding the right supplier, cheaper prices and a suitable plan can be very time consuming. Fortunately, with Key Results, you can compare ALL electricity suppliers before making a decision and we can help you choose the cheapest prices and the plan that best suits you.

What is EAC (Estimated Annual Consumption)?

EAC or Estimated Annual Consumption refers to the estimated amount of electricity you consume in a year. It is measured in kWh – kilowatt hours. EAC is usually not mentioned in your bill, you can calculate it by using the consumption and the period of a single bill. This will help you calculate your consumption for a single day and then you can find out how much it will be for 365 days – a year. As bills vary season to season and meter readings can be estimated, it is not always possible to calculate an exact consumption but the EAC still provides us with an estimated consumption which can be used to estimate your bills.

Many suppliers use EAC to quote electricity prices so it is very important to know what the EAC of your electricity meter is. Calculating EAC is simple but with as many bills as there as suppliers and with different bill formats for all of them, customers sometimes struggle to find the information to calculate their EAC. This is where we come in – our experienced energy consultants are familiar with bill formats and can calculate the EAC for you. They can even teach you how to calculate it and help you understand your bill better.

What information will I require to obtain a business electricity quote?

Please bear in mind an electricity price is quoted for an electricity meter. Most businesses have only one electricity meter installed at their site but it is common to find sites with multiple meters. So when a business needs an electricity quote we are usually referring to all the meters installed at the business site or sites if a business is operating from multiple sites.

It is also common for business sites that have multiple meters only actively using one of the meters or using one meter more than the others. As per the customer’s requirements we can quote electricity prices for all or any specific number of meters.

In order to provide a business with an electricity quote we require the following information for each of your business sites and electricity meters.

  • Full site address including the post code
  • MPAN
  • Meter serial number
  • Meter Type
  • EAC

We understand it is not always possible for customers to provide all the information listed above but there is nothing to worry about, we can quote prices with the least bit amount of information so customers should try to provide us as much information as they can and we will take care of the rest.

What is half hourly electricity supply?

A Half Hourly electricity supply is referred to a supply where an Hour Hourly electricity meter is being used. It is a type of electricity meter used for very high consumptions.

The meter is connected to a telephone line to provide meter readings to the supplier every 30 minutes, hence the name Half Hourly Meter.

The ability to provide meter reading on an half hourly basis helps suppliers accurately determine the electricity consumption, provide very accurate bills and offer a customized price quote.

It is more complex and time consuming to provide a quote for half hourly meters when compared to other types of electricity meters. Usually for other types of meters we can provide a quote on the spot but in case of half hourly meters we have to obtain a bespoke quote from the suppliers who support half hourly meters.

Key Results can obtain half hourly quotes from all available suppliers for your business and present you with an easy to understand report to include all the quotes, including a best quote, for your meter which would also include a comparison of all the savings you can make when you switch.

What is smart meter?

Smart meters are smart! They are the latest kind of electricity meters to be introduced in the UK which will replace the need to take meters readings. They automatically record electricity consumption in intervals of an hour or less and provide this information back to the supplier at least on a daily basis.

The latest generation of Smart meters allows two-way communication between the consumer and the supplier which allow for the display of accurate real-time information on energy usage of the meter for the both the customer and the supplier.

The United Kingdom’s Department of Energy and Climate Change intends to have smart meters in all homes and businesses in the future. More information is available on the roll-out of smart meters on the website of the Department of Energy and Climate Change at www.gov.uk/decc
